Let’s talk about air filters. They may seem like a relatively minor part, but they actually have a big effect on performance.
The key to our great air filter is its balance between air flow and filtration. The right balance allows for greater horsepower, and superior gas mileage, while making sure that your engine is properly protected from pollutants and particles that can cause engine damage.
The number of pleats is a key factor in creating a balanced filter. Mercedes-Benz genuine air filters master the delicate balance between air flow and filtration, with an average of 30% more pleats than aftermarket brands we tested, while still providing your engine with the air it needs.
Genuine Mercedes-Benz air filters can also require less frequent replacement. Some only needing to be replaced every 40,000 miles or four years. Other aftermarket filters need to be changed well before that. Some even at 12,000 miles. That means potentially buying three times as many filters, and three times as many visits to the shop.
Another important factor in choosing an air filter is the fit. Obviously you don’t want any air bypassing the filter and entering the engine unfiltered. Genuine Mercedes-Benz air filters have a very soft flexible rubber seal. This seal ensures a very precise fit. If you look at the competition you’ll see some with very hard rubber and some that are just too big. In both cases, this is going to result in gaps around the filter.
Next let’s look at the quality of the materials used. In these filters, if you hold this one up to the light you can see right through it. Which means many small particles can flow right through it too. You can clearly see that this aftermarket filter is made with lower quality paper. It visibly has fewer pleats than the genuine filter. And notice that the glue doesn’t even cover the entire length of the filter. Compare that to the high quality paper of the genuine part.
