An oil filter needs to filter 100% of the oil before it reaches your engine. A poorly designed filter can allow dust and dirt to damage your engine. An ineffective oil filter can also block oil from getting to your engine, which may result in damage. This means that what might start out as a $10 savings can quickly become a drastically more expensive engine repair bill.
The most basic requirement of an oil filter is that its dimensions are correct. The filter needs to fit with the housing precisely in order to have optimal filtration. Even a half a millimeter can make a big difference. When a filter doesn’t fit the assembly, the results are unfiltered oil, pour oil quality over time, and potentially engine damage.
Additionally, oil filters are generally made from paper, but genuine Mercedes-Benz filters are made from a high-quality pleated fleece. The fleece material can provide a stronger product, and a longer product lifetime.
The lifespan of a filter is very important. The genuine Mercedes-Benz oil filter took the longest to reach its capacity of any filter we tested. The genuine Mercedes-Benz oil filter lasts up to 45 percent longer than aftermarket alternatives.
Getting back to size and fit, let’s look at the genuine Mercedes-Benz oil filter first so we have a baseline to compare the aftermarket alternatives. The Mercedes-Benz filter has reinforcements on the side to prevent twisting, which often happens to inferior filters under extreme performance conditions. As you can see, it fits nice and tight with perfect tension. This part looks most similar to the Mercedes-Benz filter, but if you put them next to each other you can see that the competitors part is slightly smaller. This results in an imperfect fit, and that can lead to unfiltered oil in your engine. The difference here is pretty simple, it’s just a much lighter weight product. It’s light weight indicates lower quality materials that do not meet Mercedes-Benz high and exact standards. Instead of high quality fleece, this one is a cheaper paper filter. Additionally it’s loose fit can allow oil to pass unfiltered to your engine. Look how easily this filter twists due to the lack of reinforcement on the side. When under pressure like hard acceleration, it will likely twist and deform, letting oil pass unfiltered into your engine. Once again, look at how few of the aftermarket filters will actually fit your car correctly. That’s a big drop in efficiency over the lifetime of the oil filter, and an increased risk of engine damage, and further repair expenses.
So when considering efficiency, fit, and lifespan, no other filter even comes close to the genuine Mercedes-Benz oil filter.
